David failed to live up to God's designation of him as, "a man after the Lord's own heart" when he sinned by taking Bathsheba, a married woman, and sleeping with her in secrecy and then having her husband Uriah killed. Even so, god showed grace by saying through Nathan, "The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt fir the Lord, the son born to you will die (2 Samuel 12:14)." God has forgiven David's sin but still punishes him by killing David's child that was born by Bathsheba when David took her as a married woman and slept with her.
